New Orleans, Part II

Dravid already covered most of the major culinary highlights we enjoyed in New Orleans this January.  But I will do my best to add a little value anyway with the few images he left me. 😉

I think my favorite part of our trip was when we ventured outside the French Quarter and saw different sides to the city beyond Bourbon St. and the touristy restaurants & shops in that area.

For example, New Orleans is known for its beautiful graveyards.  This is Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 (we tried to visit a different cemetery the previous day, but go there just as it was closing to visitors for the afternoon).  This is the oldest cemetery in the city, and you could tell–while some of the tombs looked to be recently refurbished, many others were crumbling and impossible to read.

While it was active, it was a non-segregated and non-denominational cemetery.  The majority of those buried there were immigrants, and died of Yellow Fever.

Flash forward some 200 years, and it made for a peaceful stroll:

We would be lying if we said that every meal we had was a good one.  We had lunch at Dat Dog on Frenchmen St. one day, and either we both picked the wrong things from the menu or, more likely, we just don’t like hot dogs enough to have really enjoyed them.  There was a little too much going on for me in the dog below (the fries were as delicious as they look, though).

On the other hand, there were also some unexpected gems.  Like Majoria’s Commerce restaurant in Dravid’s last post, or District Donuts on Magazine St.  Even though he said he wasn’t hungry, Dravid snuck a bite of my donut, below, and immediately had to order his own.  District Donut also has sliders (if only we were hungrier!), and they have their own cold brew on-tap.

District Donuts!

Because festival season was just beginning as we were leaving the city, I picked up this mini king cake to snack on while I was in the hotel room.  The cake itself was not special.  However, that piggy drowning in purple, green, and yellow sprinkles made it entirely worth it.
